Passing of Ruger Camp #1 Brother Wendell Greenleaf Small Jr.

It is with regret and much sorrow that I am informing you of the passing on June 16, 2019 of our Brother Wendell G. Small.

Wendell is survived by his wife  Chungsim "Lisa" Small of 56 years, his son Wendell Small III of Fayetteville, NC; two brothers Graham and Glaysen of Biddeford and Sanford, ME; and two sisters Leona Ansara or E. Hartford, CT. Gladys of Saco, ME.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday June 19, 2019 at the Gardner’s United Methodist Church, 4555 Rosehill Rd. Fayetteville, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be sent to the Maine Historical Society, 485 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101.

Wendell joined the Ruger Camp in December of 2004 deriving his right of SUVCW membership from his Grandfather Levi Greenleaf Small, PVT Co. I, 1st Maine Cavalry. He served the Camp well in numerous offices including Camp Commander, Secretary/Treasurer, Historian, Editor of the Ruger Bugler Camp newsletter, Chaplain, and JROTC Coordinator. Brother Wendell was a loyal, devoted, and beloved member and officer of our Camp and our Order, and a friend to all of us. He will be greatly missed.

I direct the Major General Thomas H. Ruger Camp #1 to observe a thirty day period of mourning, beginning today, Monday June 17, 2019. The Camp Charter and membership badges are to be draped in black for this period in memory of Brother Wendell.

Let us all keep Brother Wendell and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

So ordered this 17th day of June, 2019.

ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW RUGER CAMP AWARD

As you all know, Brother Charles Allen passed away earlier this year on March 12th.  At the time, Brother Charles was serving as our Ruger Camp Chaplain at the age of 95 years.  I believe that Charles was the oldest active and participating member of The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.  Brother Charles Allen was also a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.  Charles was a loyal and devoted member and officer of our Camp, a friend
to us all and he is truly missed.

As mentioned at our 1 December meeting, in order to further honor the memory of Brother Charles Allen I am establishing a new Ruger Camp #1 award that will be named The Charles W. Allen Award.   This award will annually go to the Brother of our Camp, who through their own efforts, recruits the highest number of new “Members” and/or “Junior Members” to the SUVCW and the Ruger Camp during the period of January 1 through December 31 of each year.   The award will be presented by the Ruger Camp Commander at the first meeting of each calendar year, and is based on information provided by the Ruger Camp Secretary.   The award will consist of a certificate and/or a memento chosen by the Camp Commander.  The first year of this award is 2012. The purpose of the award is again to honor the memory of Brother Charles Allen, and also to encourage us all to make an extra effort to recruit new Members to our Order and our Camp.   I wish you all a Happy New Year!

So Ordered the 28th Day of December, 2012.

Yours in Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty,

Dennis C. St. Andrew, PCC
